Road Freight and pallet distribution company Pegasus Express Ltd has recently taken delivery of tractor units and trailers from Airdre based T.O.M

Following an initial order of four, Euro 6 Mercedes-Benz Actros Bigspace cab tractor units and five double deck Montracon trailers which joined a fleet of 40 vehicles, Pegasus Express contacted T.O.M's national business manager Dougie Bennett to provide the latest batch of vehicles and trailers to accommodate a substantial growth in the pallet distribution business.

Explains Dougie, 'Pegasus Express had a requirement for vans, rigids, tractor units and trailers which we were able to supply speedily. 'The order comprises four Mercedes-Benz Sprinter vans, three Atego curtainside 7.5 tonners, eight Actros 460hp Bigspace cab tractor units and nine Montracon sloping roof, curtainside triaxle semitrailers. They all display the distinctive 'flying horse' logo.' Commented Pegasus Express finance director Jacki Murphy, 'the original four Actros units were the first trucks we acquired from T.O.M and since then we have steadily built our fleet with the Airdrie company. We have been impressed with how T.O.M have worked with us to ensure that vehicles are kept maintained without causing any disruption to our business needs. 'Their geographical growth across the UK is also an important factor as they now have depots within the locale of our own.'

Pegasus Express was established in 1980 as an Aberdeen based courier company servicing the then emerging oil industry. Understandably, changes in market conditions have seen the company undergo a number of transformations, diversifying to parcel delivery T.O.M Helps Flying Horse Fleet To Expand and then pallet distribution services entered its portfolio. Conditions haven't always been stable for the company, but a management buyout in 2011 restored efficiency and profitability to Pegasus, thanks to the efforts and investments of its then four owners: managing director Jim Cowie, finance director Jacki Murphy, commercial director Joe McNab and operations director Willie Goodall who has now retired. Jacki Murphy explained; 'By stripping back and rebuilding the company, and by strategically investing in its infrastructure, we ensured that we could amply meet the needs of our customers, offering a first class service and now moving an average of 5,000 pallets per week.'

Part of the new management's strategy for growth was to re-join Pall-Ex in 2012. Jacki added; 'Pall-Ex membership has benefitted our business, allowing us to offer our customers reputable, trusted services throughout the UK and Europe. In fact, last year Pegasus Express transferred all of its pallet network trading to Pall-Ex and now provides Pall-Ex network operations across four of its six depots. The four Scottish depots involved are based at Longman Industrial Estate, Inverness; Altens Industrial Estate, Aberdeen; Smeaton Road Dundee, and Buchanan Business Park in Stepps which is home to the Glasgow office. The other two Pegasus depots are located in Preston and Birmingham. The company employs 110 people and offers some 40,000sq.ft of warehousing.

Apart from its Pall-Ex network services, Pegasus operates bespoke services on behalf of two major UK companies and enjoys strong relationships with a range of Scottish businesses, moving throughout mainland Scotland and the Islands. The new trunking vehicles, supplied by T.O.M, are already earning their keep, reports Jacki Murphy. 'Fuel efficiency has increased by a average of 1.5mpg so further investment in our fleet with Mercedes-Benz vehicles was a natural progression. 'Our artic units provide the core of our operations and we can work up to 20 hours out of every 24. It is therefore critical to our operation that we can run reliable, efficient units.' Looking to the future, Jacki concluded; 'We've gone from strength to strength and will continue to develop our unrivalled service, assisting our clients in achieving their objectives as we achieve our own ambitions. In addition to the investment in our fleet, we are also investing in our IT systems to enable our customers to access 'real time' information.'
